Background of the Study:
Domestic violence is a pervasive issue that transcends socio-economic, cultural, and geographical boundaries, exerting profound impacts on the mental health of victims. In Ijebu North Local Government Area, Ogun State, domestic violence is a critical public health concern that significantly affects the psychological well-being of those involved. The interplay between domestic violence and mental health is complex, often resulting in depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (Afolabi, 2023). Victims of domestic violence frequently experience long-term emotional trauma that impairs their ability to function effectively in daily life. Social stigma and isolation further exacerbate these issues, as victims are reluctant to seek help due to cultural taboos and fear of reprisal (Balogun, 2024). Despite various intervention programs aimed at mitigating domestic violence and supporting mental health, there remains a substantial gap in understanding the local dynamics of this relationship. This study employs a multidisciplinary approach, integrating insights from psychology, sociology, and public health to provide a comprehensive analysis of how domestic violence affects mental health in Ijebu North (Okoro, 2025).
Statement of the Problem:
In Ijebu North, domestic violence continues to pose a significant threat to the mental health of victims. Despite intervention efforts, high levels of emotional distress, including depression, anxiety, and PTSD, persist among those exposed to domestic violence (Adetokunbo, 2023). Cultural stigma and inadequate support services exacerbate the impact, leaving many victims without the necessary resources for recovery. The lack of comprehensive mental health services and effective legal protection further compounds the problem. This study seeks to explore the multifaceted relationship between domestic violence and mental health, identifying underlying factors and proposing strategies to improve support systems for victims.
Objectives of the Study:
To examine the relationship between domestic violence and mental health outcomes in Ijebu North.
To identify the key factors that exacerbate mental health issues among domestic violence victims.
To recommend strategies for improving mental health support and reducing domestic violence.
Research Questions:
How does domestic violence affect the mental health of victims in Ijebu North?
What factors contribute to the severity of mental health issues among domestic violence victims?
What interventions can effectively improve mental health outcomes for victims of domestic violence?
Research Hypotheses:
Exposure to domestic violence significantly worsens mental health outcomes.
Cultural stigma and a lack of support services exacerbate the mental health effects of domestic violence.
Comprehensive intervention strategies will lead to improved mental health among domestic violence victims.
Significance of the Study:
This study is significant as it appraises the critical relationship between domestic violence and mental health in Ijebu North. By identifying the factors that contribute to psychological distress, the research aims to inform policy and intervention strategies that can better support victims and promote overall mental well-being (Balogun, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to appraising the relationship between domestic violence and mental health in Ijebu North Local Government Area, Ogun State, focusing on local cultural and support system factors.
